Yet, in spite of the connectivity of our public transport system, he observes that many Singaporeans still hope to one day own and drive a car in Singapore, representing class and status. How one gets around the city is fundamental to every person’s daily life, and concurrently reflects the class dynamics of Singapore society. In this workshop, he invites you to think about your personal memories and histories with public transport. Come together to create an artwork using pictures of observations on your daily commute, and reflect on your relationship to our buses and trains.*Materials will be provided.Preparation before the workshop:In the week leading to the workshop, you can start documenting your commutes on public transport. Take pictures of anything that perks your attention. Maybe it’s the way an old man is napping at his seat. Maybe it’s the way an aunty grips onto her handbag. Maybe it’s the aunty’s Candy Crush game on her phone. Maybe it’s the way the train doors close. Maybe it’s the architecture of the MRT station. Maybe it’s the view of your neighbourhood as your train reaches your stop. Maybe it’s the view outside the bus window of the different characters waiting for their buses. When you get home, load these pictures onto your computer. Reflect on each image. Which ones felt more significant than others? Write these thoughts down. Think about what makes you connect most with that certain image. Choose three images. These three images should feel significant enough that you would want to spend some time making an artwork out of them. You can either print the images out, or bring your laptop/tablet to the workshop. Remember to also bring your reflections to the workshop.Images: Yeo Tze Yang, Green Light (2017), Oil on canvas, 40.5 x 61 cm.Yeo Tze Yang, Man Waiting On The Platform (2020), Oil on canvas, 100 x 55cm.
