Informative Talk: "Fake or Not, and What's the Big Deal?"

Fake news is one of the many challenges faced by our society today and if left unverified, they will create distortions, untruths and misinformation.

While rumours, conspiracy theories and hoaxes have existed as long as human communication has, recent political events in different parts of the world have put fake news in the spotlight. In Singapore, a wide range of online falsehoods ranging from plastic eggs, collapsed roof tops and explosions, to fake news reports, have circulated on social media and Instant Messaging apps. What is fake news and what is not?

Online falsehoods have many repercussions, what should people do in order not to become victims? This talk also addresses the producers of falsehoods and their motivations and why people believe in them.

Join us on 10 March 2018 for an informative talk by our esteemed speaker, Dr Carol Soon (Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies), on how we can do our part to mitigate the problems brought on by the uncensored spread of fake news.

This will be followed by a Guided Tour of SDC’s Special Exhibition, ‘The Power of 1’.

The talk is brought to you jointly by S’pore Discovery Centre and Info-communications Media Development Authority.
