How did the boatmen move their boats before they were motorised? Why did the the coolies "bounce" on the planks? How did the building of bridges affect the river? Why was the Singapore River called the "Belly of the Carp"? For many years, Singapore River was the lifeblood of the country. Ships came from all over the world, attracted by its free port status and other advantages. Traders and immigrants came, attracted by the wealth that could be made. Singapore as a modern nation as we know it today grew from that first port that was the Singapore River. And so it was for over 150 years, until 1977, when the cleaning of the river began ... Today it is an entertainment and leisure hub. Join Tina Sim, author of "Time Travel, Singapore! Our Singapore River" for a walk along its banks as she takes you on a journey back in time.  This event is organised in conjunction with Singapore HeritageFest (SHF).Please take note of the following: A copy of the book will be given to all participants. All children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Once all tour slots are filled, and after 23 May 2023, no walk-ins will be accepted. Minimum 10 to start, or fees will be refunded. Kindly arrive 15 minutes before the start of the tour. Electronic or printed ticket(s) must be presented in order to join this tour. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along a bottle of water. The tour may be partly or totally cancelled due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Please bring light rain gear as we may proceed if rain is light. Participants will receive a full refund in the case of tour cancellation.
