Will Malay votes swing in favour of Pakatan Harapan, or will Barisan Nasional come back stronger? Find out what people on the ground are saying. And also Wan Saiful's plans after he leaves IDEAS. In the last 2013 General Election, federal opposition parties successfully captured 72 out of 97 seats in the urban and semi-urban areas but only 17 out of 125 seats in rural areas. To win in the upcoming elections, Pakatan Harapan will need a major swing in rural Malay votes while continuing to appeal to urbanites. Questions are: What is the likelihood of a "Malay Tsunami?" What may influence the decisions of the Malay electorate? How do they view Prime Minister Najib Razak and now opposition leader, Mahathir Mohamad and the coalitions they lead? Findings will be shared from a series of focus group discussions conducted with urban Malay voters in Kedah and Johor, the top two hotly contested states. Join us for an evening talk as we gear towards the next general election, and also hear from Wan Saiful Wan Jan on his plans after stepping down as CEO of IDEAS, the think tank he had co-founded. The Speakers Series aims to democratise intellectual discourse and expand worldview, thereby facilitating understanding of the world we live in, and questioning long-held assumptions told to us in history, philosophy, politics, and economics.
