They have been artists and creators inspired by the socio-cultural systems that surround them. They produced decorative, artistic objects as well as objects to meet everyday demands. These craft traditions have had an all pervasive impact in Indian culture leaving an imprint on contemporary visual culture too. What were some sources of inspiration for these artists and craftspeople? Why were words incorporated into the aesthetics of these art forms? How were images, motifs and symbols visualised and portrayed? Are these vanishing traditions and is their survival under threat in contemporary times? These are some questions that will be addressed in this conference. This conference will introduce participants to the ancient tradition of scripting in Indian art and craft. It will also present perspectives on the influence of Indian symbolism in the creation of an image. Lastly, the conference will present contemporary perspectives on the creation of images inspired by diasporic identities. A day-long event, the conference will feature international speakers, curators, artists, and collectors.
