In this 3rd edition of critically acclaimed Volcana Brainstorm, developed in Japan by Australian artist Elena Knox, workshop participants will imagine, schematize, and casually pitch their own artwork or invention that addresses the following problem: How can we encourage red shrimp to mate in the Ecosphere?Ecospheres are glass globes containing closed ecologies of sea water, micro-organisms, shrimp, algae, and bacteria. They need only light to self-sustain. Scientists intended them to illustrate a system for survival on space colonies and in climate emergencies. The shrimp in these tiny worlds are native to volcanic rockpools: selected for toughness, adaptability, longevity. But though they will mate in captivity, in ecospheres they remain celibate; everything else continues in balance, but for unknown reasons animal life does not reproduce. So we wonder:* Why don’t they feel sexy?* What would make them feel sexy?* Would they like prawnography?! Shall we make porn for shrimp?Locally, the project promotes conversations about Japan’s reducing population, so-called “sexless Japan”. Why are the shrimp deciding not to procreate? We look across cultures, into ourselves, into the deep sea and up to the sky. The workshop is cross-media. You can participate in any form: what matters is that you have fun and aim to help shrimp! Past contributions have included poetry, biology, filmmaking, net art, sculpture, costume, performance, sound, photography, and more. Some rough collage and craft materials are provided, but participants are asked to also bring what they might need, at minimum some paper and pens/pencils.More background here: http://elenaknox.com/volcana.htmlRegistration is free and open to the public, but advance booking is required by Thursday 17 November. A maximum of 15 participants on a first-come, first-served basis."Festival of the Fantastic" is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia-Japan Foundation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
