You are invited to a development reading of INHERITANCE: a pick-the-path experience by Daniel Arnold (Alley Theatre, Canada) and YouSunday 4 February 2018, 3.30pm–4.40pm and 5pm - 6.10pmThe Necessary Stage Black Box Take part in the development of an experimental, interactive play that engages you in a struggle over land reclamation in a colonised nation. An indigenous man is cooking his dinner in a beautiful house on a remote lakeside estate. Suddenly a non-indigenous couple arrives for a weekend getaway, claiming this is their father’s house… who is this man, and where is their Dad? They ask the man to leave because this isn’t his house, and what happens next—you decide. Inheritance is about three people vying for control over a large plot of land, and at every crucial step the audience votes for what the characters do next. Featuring: Remesh Panicker (Singapore)Marisa Emma Smith (Vancouver)Daniel Arnold (Vancouver)and facilitated by Emilie Leclerc (Vancouver) From writer/performer Daniel Arnold: Canada, where I live, is currently attempting to reconcile and make amends for injustices and crimes done to its indigenous people since colonization. Through this play I want to make that reconciliation entirely personal – in people’s own backyards. My hope for doing this development reading in Singapore is to discover ways that the indigenous relationship to colonization differs or is similar. Does this content relate to Singaporeans, and if so, how?BiographiesDaniel Arnold has co-written and performed the plays Tuesdays & Sundays and Any Night, both of which have been published twice in Canada and the USA, toured nationally and internationally for numerous years, garnering numerous awards and being listed among critic’s choice for “Best Shows of the Year” in Toronto, Vancouver, and New York. Tuesdays & Sundays was also broadcast as a radio play on CBC and BBC. Any Night received a month-long run Off-Broadway and his screenplay adaptation won the Canada-wide “CFF Super Channel Screenplay Award”. Daniel also co-wrote and starred in the feature film Lawrence & Holloman, which won thirteen jury awards including the Canadian Comedy Award for “Best Feature Film” and was theatrically released in Canada and the USA. Daniel is a protégé recipient of Canada’s most prestigious theatre award, The Siminovitch Prize.Remesh Panicker is a critically-acclaimed actor and veteran of the Singapore stage. He’s played God and the Devil, and many things in-between. He’s brought life to an assortment of characters - from a talking vaudevillian chicken to Shylock, a brilliant but declining mathematician to a hapless go-between, a beloved Hindu deity to an apartheid-era African, a blue-collar Malaysian tradesman to the Ghost of Christmas Present. Along the way he’s picked up 5 The Straits Times Life!Theatre Award nominations and 3 wins—Best Actor (ART), Best Supporting Actor (Proof) and Best Supporting Actor (The Merchant of Venice). His portrayal of Nelson in Weiyu Films’ ensemble TV series The Hush earned him an Asian Television Awards nomination for Best Actor in 2017. Remesh is also an award-winning executive producer, writer and creative consultant with extensive experience in the documentary, TV drama and telemovie genres. He’s also one of the region’s leading professional narrators and voice talents. Marisa Emma Smith is an actor, director, and Artistic Producer of Alley Theatre. She recently received a Jessie Award nomination for "Outstanding Lead Performance" in Little One, an Alley Theatre production which was presented by the Firehall Arts Centre, Anvil Theatre in New Westminster, Centaur Theatre in Montreal, and won "Outstanding Overall Production" at the New York Fringe. Other acting credits have included site-specific productions at the Waldorf Hotel of Problem Child, Risk Everything, and Tape (Jessie nomination "Outstanding Production"), Kayak (rEvolver/Firehall), Burning In (Gateway Theatre), The Shoes (Belfry), Carnage (Pi Theatre), and Confessions (Alley Theatre's inaugural production). Marisa has also directed seven productions for Alley Theatre (including The Ridiculous Darkness, Three Stories Up, O'wet/Lost Lagoon, and Mrs. Warren's Profession), Small Parts for Solo Collective, numerous staged readings and short works, and was the resident producer at Neworld Theatre 2012-14, Artistic Producer at Solo Collective in 2014/15 and Artist in Residence at Vancouver Moving Theatre in 2017. Her productions have twice been nominated for the "Critic's Choice Award for Innovation", and Alley Theatre productions have been nominated for nine Jessie Awards, winning two. Marisa is the recipient of the Joanna Maratta Award for "displaying the most potential to contribute to the Vancouver theatre community". Emilie Leclerc is a Vancouver-based actor and theatre creator. She is proud of her French and Indigenous Ancestry (Micmac, Nipissing, Algonquin/Huron). She grew up in Quebec and works professionally on stage, on screen or behind a microphone in both English and French. Recent theatre credits include The Ridiculous Darkness (Alley Theatre), Unité Modèle and Bonjour, là, bonjour (Théâtre la Seizième), Redpatch (Hardline Productions) and A Charlie Brown Christmas (Carousel Theatre). Next up, Emilie will be returning to Australia to perform in Patrice Balbina's Chance Encounter with the End of the World (Australian Theatre for Young People), a show about immigration which she co-created.
