Ba-Zi Reading by Desiree Tham Sunday 23 OctoberLower Gallery, ObjectifsSessions are restricted to a max of 15 minutes$15 for one person$20 for 2 people (+$5 top up to be made in person)If you've ever wanted to get your Ba-Zi calculated, this is your chance! Desiree Tham, one of the exhibiting artists for Sugar Pills for a Bitter World, will be giving Ba-Zi reading sessions in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition. The Four Pillars of Destiny, known as "Ba-Zi", which means "eight characters" or "eight words" in Chinese, is a Chinese astrological concept that a person's destiny or fate can be divined by the two sexagenary cycle characters assigned to their birth year, month, day, and hour. Ba-Zi readings are believed to help guide one in making good decisions, living in harmony, and finding the path to fulfillment.Sessions are capped at 15 minutes per slot. Each slot can accommodate 1-2 persons, with a $5 top-up to be made at the session itself for the second person. For two person sessions, the Ba-Zi can be read to examine compatibility in business, love and other aspects. Both persons must be related, e.g. partners, siblings, business partners.All participants must provide their birth day, month, year, and time on the sign up form beforehand in order for Desiree to do the Ba-Zi calculations. Her ongoing body of work unpacks the material and cultural philosophies of feng shui and updates them with the materiality of the 21st century. She uses feng shui as a starting point to examine the lengths at which cultures pursue or rationalise abstract goals such as luck, happiness or future wealth.She has exhibited in various shows such as a solo show at How to Chase a Mountain (2021) at  ISLANDS Peninsula, and group shows such as An Uncanny Assortment of Miscellaneous Objects (2021) at VT Art Salon, Taiwan and in art fairs such as Asia Art Now (2019), France.
