Malaysian literature in English and Chinese in the last two decades have enjoyed a surge in international acclaim and sales due to their success in Britain and Taiwan respectively. But is this really just a contemporary phenomenon? In this talk, I explore a few ways Malaysian books have taken advantage of an international market and readership since the colonial period in order to express a Malaysian identity.Curator’s bio:Brandon K. Liew is a doctoral researcher at the University of Melbourne where he lectures on Malaysian history, literature, and emerging cultural productions across the Asia-Pacific. He publishes scholarly work on Malaysian Literary History and the global Malaysian novel, as well as poetry, essays, and reviews of Malaysian books.
