Contextualising and historicising queer cultural practices within a broad array of films from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, Stanley Kwan provocatively examines issues of gender and sexuality through interviews with directors Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Tsai Ming-Liang, Ang Lee and Tsui Hark. Negotiating between the personal and collective, Kwan takes his sexuality and familial history as a springboard to explore the deeper homoerotic undertones of Chinese cinema.Yang ± Yin is a pivotal product of Kwan’s career wherein he publicly declared his sexuality and became the first openly gay auteur to represent the community in Sinophone cinema.—Ticketing NoticePlease purchase the category you are eligible for.
