During the fight against the 30 year dictatorship of Suharto's New Order regime, Semsar was a prominent force behind the national student movement; resisting against this dictatorship. Semsar tirelessly campaigned and used his art as a tool to advocate social justice and stand up for issues such as labor rights. As he became targets of physical violence by the Indonesian authorities, he left Indonesia for Canada in 1998 and returned to Indonesia in 2004.Presented in this exhibition "Semsar Siahaan: Art, Liberation", for instance, is his renowned work "G8 Pizza and the Study of the Falling Man", which reflects his sharp critique towards bureaucracy which banks on the misfortunes of the poor. Our research team, along with renowned art historian and Curator T.K Sabapathy, has compiled significant research materials for the exhibition's publication.
