He served as President of the Max Planck Society (Germany) 2002-2014 and prior to that, directed the Department of Molecular Cell Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen for 16 years. Dr. Gruss is a recipient of multiple awards for science, including the German Future Prize, the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit, the Harnack Medal, and the highest scientific honor in Germany, the Leibniz Prize. He is a member of various national and international scientific organizations including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Göttingen Academy of Sciences, the European Molecular Biology Organization, and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and is an honorary member of the National Academy of Sciences Republic of Korea and a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and The Japan Academy. Dr. Gruss is a leader in technology transfer and innovation. While at Max Planck Society, he was appointed to the “Innovation Dialogue” Steering Committee, chaired by Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss German research and innovation policies. He founded Except in 1999 while completing his Master in Industrial Design Engineering in Delft in 2005, studied Architecture in Australia at the University of Western Australia in 2001 and 2002, and obtained his Master’s degree in Architecture & Urban Planning at Yale University in 2008. Tom’s work spans urban development, business, governance, and industry. He worked on documentary production, creative communication and educational projects with the United Nations for close to two decades and produced a number of award winning documentaries, interactive websites and the bi-lingual Our World magazine. More than 15 years of experience in agroforestry, including project management and coordination, native inventories and monitoring, classification of wood products and NTFPs in the Amazon. Extensive experience in rural economy and sustainable development models, with international experience (UNDP and FAO) in management and leadership positions. He developed several volunteer works, mainly in Africa and Asia. He coordinated research projects that helped to consolidate productive processes for large-scale agroforestry projects. Enthusiastic about transparency, sharing, empowerment and collaboration among people.
