Now the story of the struggle for equality continues with QUEERS: Volume 2 (from 1967 to 2016): from decriminalisation to same-sex marriage.QUEERS is a smart, funny, heartbreaking, (and heartwarming!) show that takes a historical look at 100 years of LGBTQ experience in Britain, as seen through the eyes of ordinary working-class people. The characters are fictional, but the events are real. It took a long long time for parliamentary legislation to be enacted to first decriminalise, and later equalise, the rights of British LGBTQ people. And, arguably, an even longer time for prevailing social attitudes to catch up. Each of these facets is woven into the fabric of the stories you will hear. QUEERS was originally commissioned to mark the 50th anniversary of the ‘Wolfenden Report’ of 1957 (aka 'The Report of the Departmental Committee on Homosexual Offences and Prostitution'). Curated by Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Doctor Who, Dracula, League of Gentlemen, Game of Thrones), eight of the UK's best queer writers were invited to create stories from a unique historical moment in time. Below is a brief introduction to the four stories you will hear in QUEERS: Volume 2. I Miss the War by Matthew Baldwin. Performed by Sean WorrallIt’s 1967 ... Jack was once a handsome young soldier who learned how to supplement his income through the generosity of older gentlemen. Today, homosexual acts are no longer a criminal offense. So why does he miss the dark days?***More Anger by Brian Fillis. Performed by Mitchell FangIt’s 1987 ... Phil is an ambitious young actor who is willing to ‘play gay’ on TV, and the horrific spectre of AIDS has created lots of opportunities for well-paid work. Gay characters are now visible on prime time telly! Hooray?***A Grand Day Out by Michael Dennis Performed by Mario ChanIt’s 1994 ... Andrew is a young man from a small town, visiting London for the first time to witness the historical parliamentary vote on the equalisation of the age of consent. But he has missed the last train home and must now rely on the kindness of strangers.***Something Borrowed by Gareth McLean Performed by Nicholas BloodworthIt’s 2016 ... Steve is about to get married, and is writing and rehearsing his speech as one of the nation's first 'gay grooms'. But addressing his extended family at the wedding dinner might be a bigger challenge than the hundred-year battle for legal equality.***IMPORTANT NOTE: This production has an R18 Rating by IMDA.
