HIGHLIGHTS:Brick House | Red Bean Architects(Photo credit: Jeremy San)The vision was to make a pure form that expressed a simple raw material. A block of brick, not plastered, not painted, wraps a floating box. Not built from the earth as most masonry begins, but suspended above ground to call attention to itself. Punched windows, with the glass surface flushed with the brick wall, articulated by a shadow gap all around, articulate a contrast of smooth versus rough. A fair-faced concrete block forms the minor volume which contains the service areas. This is a bungalow for a family of 6. In spite of the context of a 3½ storey planning envelope, we wanted to preserve the intimacy of a small family house. Increasing the number of floors would only directly increase the barriers between spaces and interaction between them. The living room space is the grand volume that welcomes and accommodates people coming together. This space opens up on three sides with large sliding glass doors to let in the scenery of lush bamboo and caesapina trees. Our Tampines Hub | DP Architects(Photo Credit: DP Architects)A people-centric and inclusive community hub, Our Tampines Hub (OTH) is a pioneering model of an integrated community, sports and lifestyle hub, purposefully designed for the residents of Tampines. This refreshing concept of integration brings about new dynamics in notions of shared economies, optimisation and productivity. It also creates immense opportunities in inclusivity, richness and new synergies in design of community and social settings for the Tampines residents. Its design was conceived through an intense participatory and engagement process with 12 public-sector stakeholders, residents of all ages and various interest groups. Featuring highly porous floor and ease of accessibility from Tampines town centre and surrounding residential fabric, the design of OTH aims to depict the synthesis of Tampines in unique physical, socio-cultural and psychological landscapes. Expressing the alternative spatial organisation in OTH, facilities are primarily clustered by programmatic synergies and not stakeholders. These clusters create a distinctive outlook externally, internally and spatially. They humanise scales and give clarity to users. Fu Yong Estate(Photo Credit: Edwin Koo)Fuyong Estate established in 1951 by Dr. Lee Kong Chian, a prominent activist and philanthropist in Singapore in the 1960s. He pioneered a provident fund based housing scheme to house his employees, and this estate became one of the earliest low cost private housing clusters in Singapore. Today, it is home to a close-knit community of 142 households that exemplify a strong "kampung" spirit. Residents here have wonderful stories to tell of their childhood in Fuyong Estate, and often reminisce the old times living in early Singapore. As the estate approaches the imminent expiry of the land's leasehold in 2046, residents are unsure about their future, their homes, and their livelihoods. Sale of
