This is where the Malay Royalty once resided among Javanese, Sumatrans, Arabs, as well as Chinese communities, all of whom left their mark in different ways.We will start in neighbouring Victoria Street and learn about the Malabar Muslim community, then we will visit tombs of the Malay royalty in one of the oldest cemeteries in Singapore, dating back to the 1820s. In the cool ambience of the nearby Malay Heritage Centre (the former Sultan’s Palace) you will learn the colourful & delightful, at times even romantic, history, heritage and culture of Singapore's Malay community. After a refreshing stop for coffee and local kueh (cakes), we'll walk through the streets and lanes and hear their stories - why one stretch of Bussorah Street was known as Kampong Kaji (Pilgrim Village) & part of Beach Road Kampong Tembaga (Copper Village). What made the residents of the Gudung Kuning (the Yellow Mansion) rich and famous? We will end by exploring a little gem of a mosque, & one of the few founded by a woman - the Masjid Hajjah Fatimah - which has escaped the redevelopment of the area.
