ABSTRACTUntil
recently three binaries dominated analysis of urban China: urban versus rural,
coast versys interior, and permanent versus temporary resident. Although these
dichotomies did not reflect the actual heterogeneity of urban life they
persisted in part because they sharpened our analytic models and focused
debates. In this lecture Professor Deborah Davis explains the advantages of
discarding these three binaries and approaching urbanization and urbanity
along several continua.ABOUT THE SPEAKER
A graduate of Wellesley College, Professor
Deborah S. Davis received a Masters degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard,
and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Boston University. She has written and edited
books and publications analyzing social changes against the backdrop of a
constantly evolving Asia. Professor Davis has also been heavily involved in the
development of Yale-NUS College since 2009, and continues to contribute to the
College’s curriculum development. She is currently teaching Sociology at Yale
University, and her primary teaching interests are inequality and
stratification, contemporary Chinese society, and methods of fieldwork.
