Born Kavain Space, RP Boo began DJ'ing (and later dancing) in the '90s as part of Chicago crew House-O-Matics. While Boo’s 2013 album Legacy was his first proper full-length release, the 43-year-old producer has been writing music for nearly 20 years. The tracks on RP’s latest album, Fingers, Bank Pads & Shoe Prints (Planet Mu), are rooted in an older style of footwork, as opposed to the newer, more-polished style championed by the Chicago footwork crew Teklife. RP Boo notes that his productions feature more bass kicks, prominent vocal samples, and an increased emphasis on rhythm. With Fingers, Bank Pads & Shoe Prints (a reference to how the producer’s digits make people dance), RP Boo continues to fill in the gaps of the genre’s evolution.
