Joo Chiat the man was resourceful, and in time he became a housing developer, a planter (rubber, coconut and spices), a tin miner, a trader, a banker and many others. Joo Chiat the person was also a Chinese revolutionary - or at least supported the cause espoused by Sun Yat Sen. He was a member of the Tong Men Hui - a society of supporters based here in Singapore. Most people today know Joo Chiat as a place, now commonly linked to Katong, and intricately bound-up with the idea of the Peranakans. Bukit Brown - it's actually MORE than just another cemetery, and MORE than just abandoned tombs. Come this Sunday morning, and listen as Chyen Yee and  Beng share with you the history of the place; see what stories the old stones can tell, look at some of the material culture found here. Listen to the real sounds of birds and even get to admire some real "super trees!" Come walk with them, and visit with the man Chew Joo Chiat himself. Yes, he is there. And also with some of his friends, and some of the people now called "Peranakans", and learn about the history of Singapore you never knew...Bukit Brown - where stories never cease...-------------------------------------------------------------------------The guided walk starts at 9.00 am and will end before 12.00pmMeeting Point: Meeting Point A (Block 2, 5 entrance).
