Launch of "Living in Babel" and "Canopy"

Come join us for the launch of The Select Centre’s first publication under its Canopy imprint - Living in Babel – Singapore Literature in Translation, showcasing some of the best vernacular writing from Singapore translated into English for the first time. Edited by Select’s co-founder Tan Dan Feng, the anthology features English translations of fiction, poetry and essays by leading writers in Chinese, Malay and Tamil, including Latha, Lee Hui Min and Mohamed Latiff Mohamed.

This collection allows English readers a peek into the rich worlds of three of Singapore’s language communities and celebrates the breadth and depth of Singapore literature. Listen to the editor, writers and translators share their insights on bringing literature across cultures.

The Select Centre’s new online literary magazine, Canopy, will be officially unveiled at the same time. Throughout September, the magazine will feature new translations of SingLit selected from our recent SG Translation Month call for submissions. Selected translations will also be showcased in a Singapore special feature on the National Translation Month website in New York.

The Canopy online magazine will be updated weekly and will carry new translations of works from Singapore and Southeast Asia, as well as essays and audiovisual content related to language, culture and identity.
