In many ways, translating is a form of editing and vice versa, as the act of editing also helps the creators translate their vision for the readers. She specialises in contemporary Turkish literature as well as comics. Her interest is in challenging official narratives and advocating freedom of expression through a wide range of creative projects and activities. She is the creator of “City in Translation”, a project exploring languages and translation in urban spaces. Her comics translations include Bouncer (Alejandro Jodorowsky [writer] and François Boucq [artist]) and Sanctuaire (Xavier Dorison [writer] and Christophe Bec [artist]). Her comics-related projects include co-curating Reframe, an exhibition (2013-14) that presented perspectives on Europe through comics from Algeria, Turkey and the UK; co-curating the International Comics Festival of Istanbul, Istanbulles (2012-13); and managing the comics section of the Narratives for Europe project (2011-12). More info on Canan can be found on www.cananmarasligil.net. EMMA HAYLEY (UK)Emma launched SelfMadeHero in 2007, after spotting a gap in the market for high quality graphic novels. Her background in publishing, following a postgraduate diploma in journalism at City University, London, has seen her work as a journalist, a film PR and as an editorial director for several small publishers. Since launching her own company, her focus has shifted to the business and entrepreneurial face of book publishing, while she remains hands-on in commissioning new titles. She was named UK Young Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year, as part of the British Book Industry Awards 2008.LIM CHENG TJU (Singapore)Lim Cheng Tju is an educator who writes about history and popular culture. His articles have appeared in the Southeast Asian Journal of Social Science, Journal of Popular Culture and Print Quarterly. He is the country editor (Singapore) for the International Journal of Comic Art and also the co-editor of Liquid City 2, an anthology of Southeast Asian comics published by Image Comics. He is one of the authors of The University Socialist Club and The Contest for Malaya: Tangled Strands of Modernity (Amsterdam University Press/National University of Singapore Press).FAIRUL NIZAM “ROY” ABLAH (Malaysia)Fairul Nizam Ablah, or known as Roy Ablah, is a freelance writer from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He has been writing scripts for animation, telemovies and drama series since 2005 for Malaysian TV. He worked with the highly-acclaimed Gonzo Studio Japan for an animation called 7 Satria, in collaboration with Funcel Studio. Apart from writing, he is also a comic publisher under the label of Maple Comics with his partner-in-crime, Amir Hafizi. It has 19 titles so far (and counting). His latest venture is Anomalous Films in which he is a partner-producer, and he has just completed a 27-episode drama series Biniku Ninja that was filmed in Europe. He admires the works of Charlie Kaufman, Quentin Tarantino, Park Chan-wook, Brian Azzarello, Paul Pope and Warren Ellis, to name a few.ABOUT THE MODERATORTAN DAN FENG (Singapore)Tan Dan Feng is active in the regional language, translation, and publishing sectors. He began working as an English-Chinese translator in 1993. He co-founded the nonprofit The Select Centre, and has been involved in the translation programmes at NTU, NUS, and SUSS as lecturer, course coordinator, and academic advisory board member. He is currently a member of the Program Committee of the Asia Pacific Translation and Interpreting Forum, the apex regional translation body. He has sat on several government committees, including the National Translation Committee, the NAC Arts Advisory Panel, and the MCI Television and Radio Advisory Committee Panel of Experts. Books that he has edited or coedited include Singapore Shifting Boundaries(2011), Indonesia Rising: Islam, Democracy and the Rise of Indonesia as a Major Power(2009), The Chinese in Indonesia (2008), and Living in Babel – Singapore Literature in Translation (2017).
