This comprehensive collection of images - shown for the first time in Singapore and Southeast Asia - documents the creative life of Wu and how he sought inspirations for some of his most significant artworks. The showcase is organized along three main chapters: Wu’s trip to Singapore in the 1980s where he created memorable paintings from the Singapore Bird Park, to the British Museum in London where he staged his solo show – one of the most prestigious platforms in Europe accorded to a Chinese artist in the early 1990s, and finally to Indonesia and Thailand where enchanted by the idyllic tropics, the artist in his 80s painted even more tirelessly. Unfurling alongside is a deep friendship, admiration and respect between two prominent artists of the contemporary age, one painting with ink and oil and the other with light, that traversed time and geography. Exhibition programmesAug 19 (Sat), 2.30pm to 4pm: Dialogue Session between Chua Soo Bin and Teo Han WueVenue: Blue Room, The Arts HouseThis dialogue session brings together two well-known personalities in Singapore's visual arts scene - Cultural Medallion photographer and gallerist Chua Soo Bin and Teo Han Wue, art writer and former director of Art Retreat incorporating Wu Guanzhong Gallery - to share their recollections of Wu Guanzhong. They will talk about the late Chinese artist’s close association with Singapore and Southeast Asia since the 1980s, which eventually led to his generous donation of paintings to Singapore in 2008. Both the speakers got to know Wu Guanzhong well since they first met him in the 1980s. Apart from organising some memorable exhibitions of Wu’s paintings here and the region, Chua followed the artist on his travels over the decades and took many photographs of him, some of which are featured in the exhibition at The Arts House. A former journalist with The Straits Times, Teo first wrote about Wu in 1986 and 1988 when the artist held his first solo exhibition in Singapore and has continued to write about him in various publications. Chua and Teo are now working together on a book with the photographs to be published by National Gallery Singapore. The session is conducted in Mandarin. It is preceded by a tour of the exhibition from 1pm to 2pm at Gallery II conducted in Mandarin.Sept 2 (Sat), 3pm to 4.30pm: Dialogue session by Choy Weng Yang and Teo Han WueVenue: Blue Room, The Arts HouseThis dialogue session between Choy Weng Yang and Teo Han Wue, the former a prominent artist and former National Museum curator and the latter a veteran art journalist, delves into the phenomenon of photographers who document the creative life and works of artists. They will examine the dynamics of such pairings, as well as the challenges and rewards of such partnerships, to broach a larger question: how do we sustain such practices in Singapore to continue documenting the lives and stories of more artists? The session is conducted in English. It is preceded by a tour of the exhibition from 1pm to 2pm at Gallery II conducted in English.
