The efforts & the confidence that ensure the survival of an independent filmmaker in Malaysia with limited mobility & being in the minority will be shared. VIMALA PERUMAL - Senior Lecturer , Head of Foundation Department @ Multimedia University (Cyberjaya) - Founder & Creative Director @ Veedu Production Sdn. Bhd. - Scriptwriter, Film Director & Film Producer VIMALA PERUMAL was born in 1982, Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia, to a proud parents, who are most responsible in exposing her to a mixed parental family, thus the exposure to interesting culture, diverse and all. Graduated from Multimedia University, Cyberjaya, Malaysia, in the field of Film and Animation in 2003, she began her career teaching visual research and communication at Multimedia University, where she earned a Masters degree in Knowledge Management. She has keen interest in the visual arts and love meeting people, sharing and expanding ideas. The humble endeavour to create the Indian community film (“Chalanggai” – Dancing Bells) has shaped a stepping-stone for many future collaboration and to further venture on many more visions. Her achievements include accolades for her winning script for the feature film “Chalanggai” from the Hubert Bals Fund of the International Film Festival in Rotterdam and The Seed Grant from National Geographic All Roads Film Project. She is grateful and delighted that to date; the film has been screened and received numerous awards from many local and internationals film festivals for its realistic and artistic depiction of Indian community life in Malaysia. Her debut short film was among the top 60 in the world, which was screened at the 30th Busan International Short Film Festival in Korea. Her debut feature film entitled “Vilaiyaatu Pasange” (Playful Folks) has its successful run at International Screens, GSC. As a stepping stone “Vilaiyaatu Pasange” has created a history being the first Malaysian Tamil Movie to be played on ASTRO Box Office. Due to tremendous support, she released her second feature film entitled, “Vetti Pasanga” (Useless Folks) two years later. Followed by her previous achievements, “Vetti Pasanga” has recorded more success compared to her directorial debut. Besides winning two Silver Awards at International level, “Vetti Pasanga” has also break the record and achieve the highest box office collection for Malaysian Tamil Movie under Wajib Tayang Scheme during its release on 2 nd January 2014. It also marks the first Malaysian Tamil Movie to be on ASTRO First. The filmmaking process and the academia world has been a road to self-discovery and have paved the way for many great opportunities abroad and at home. Vimala graduated with her doctorate degree in the field of film production and human communication at University Putra Malaysia in 2016.
