He has been involved in the film industry for a half century, working on short animated films, commercials, public service ads, documentaries & Malaysia's first animation feature film. As a creative writer, he has written texts for universities & for Malaysia’s National Theatre. As a part-time lecturer, Hassan has conducted training sessions and workshops on film & animation in Malaysia at top universities, colleges & animation studios, including being a syllabus moderator. He has also been invited to be a lecturer & trainer in Brunei, Singapore, Sudan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India & Norway. He is a recipient of many awards for his films, including a Jury Award in Jakarta for his first documentary. He is acknowledged as an Asian Animation Pioneer by NTU Singapore, Father of Malaysian Animation by the Malaysian Prime Minister & awarded an Honorary Masters by UiTM. He has been on numerous film festival juries internationally & has curated film & animation programmes for Malaysia, Singapore, Germany and Hungary. He is currently a film critic & film historian. His papers have been published in books & academic journals, among them: British Film Institute, Cornell University Press, MacMillan India, Southeast Asia Research, Journal of Asia-Pacific Communication and Cahiers du Cinema. He has presented original research into the traditional performing arts as the roots of Malaysian cinema at international conferences. He has written two books: Malaysian Cinema in a Bottle (2013) & From Mouse Deer to Mouse: 70 Years of Malaysian Animation (2016). Both books include film, animation & visual effects in early Singapore cinema.
