but more importantly, it is an enabler of self-realization. 'The Kid From The
Big Apple' scriptwriter & director, Jess Teong shares that everything that
we are experiencing around us is a
rich source of inspiration for filmmaking. For every matter that is
present in life, brings about significant meaning & impact.
About Jess TeongAfter
a career spanning over 20 years in the entertainment industry, Jess
Teong is now carving out a niche for herself as an award winning film
director and screenplay writer.
She started her career in 1990 as a fashion model winning the inaugural
competition of Malaysian Female Cover Girl of the Year. Next came over
forty TV commercials across the Asia Pacific region including
endorsements for famous brands such as De Beers Diamonds in Japan,
Dunhill, Pantene and Lux to name but a few.
This followed with time spent singing professionally both in Malaysia
and overseas. She found time to release a number of albums before taking
on acting roles in various drama series, two full length movies and as
the host of an extensive number of TV shows. There was also time as a
copywriter for multiple lifestyle columns in the Chinese tabloids.
It was during her time acting that Jess developed aspirations to try her
hand on the other side of the camera and take on the role as producer.
To date she has produced three feature movies: ‘Ghost Buddies’, ‘Who’s
Your Daddy?’ and the award winning ‘Paper Moon’, as well as co-producing
the Hong Kong movie ‘Special Female Force’.
She has also become the Managing Director and Producer at Three Pictures Sdn Bhd.
More recently the Malaysian movie ‘The Kid from the Big Apple’, which
was written and directed by Jess, has won the Award of Best Screenplay,
Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Newcomer at the 7th Macau
International Movie Festival. The movie also won ‘Special Jury Award’
and ‘Best Young Actor’ in 28 th Malaysia Film Festival. The story itself
has been shortlisted as one of the finalists in the New York Screenplay
Contest organized by the New York Writers Guild and followed by
‘Hollywood Screenplay Contest’. Together with the movie, she was invited
to attend a number of prominent film festivals in Japan, Singapore and
China in 2016. Just recently, she is awarded ‘2016 Outstanding
Filmmaker’ by Chinese Film Association in Malaysia.
Jess is currently completing her latest project the feature film ‘Before
We Forget’. This family friendly movie will be released later in 2017.
She is also passionate about nature and with an eye for fine detail she
appreciates art and beauty in all its forms. Most importantly Jess knows
how to live life to its fullest and her motto is: “Everyone’s life is a
good story. If you live life to the fullest, then it can become a good
script and eventually a good movie!”
