Join us for a walk around the beautiful, historic & now super cool area of Blair Rd, these days home to many art galleries & artists.Our tour will take us on a walk to see some of the wonderfully nostalgic works of famous street artist Yip Yew Chong (Singapore's equivalent of Banksy?!) - see an example above. The unassuming YC is probably Singapore's most famous wall mural artist today, and in his own words "I made my first stroke of paint on a perimeter wall of an old house at Everton Road. It was a blessed stroke which opened up a whole new world of experiences and a full year of happiness." Today you can find YC's nostalgic wall murals all over Singapore - from Kampong Glam to Chinatown to his latest at the National Museum. Come along with us to visit this very first wall mural of his at Everton Road and hear from the artist himself about his journey and his works.We'll then explore various other hidden treasures in the area, ending with a visit to an international art gallery, Art Porters, where we'll be swept into the amazing artworks of SZTO and Ren Zi, two of today's foremost mixed-media Singaporean artists with unique perspectives.History of area: an 1881 map shows buildings along Kampong Bahru Road, Spottiswoode Park Road and Everton Road. These buildings are of the Early Shophouse style and still stand today. The terrace houses along Blair Road are from a later period, and were built in the 1920s. This area was settled over time by the more well to do members of the Chinese merchant classes and their families, who were escaping from the increasingly overcrowded and unsanitary urban areas east of Cantonment Road.Photo: Art Porters Gallery & Carlos Munoz Lunque (one of the artist we will visit on the tour!)
