Professor Yuen Yuen Ang, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan, returns to her native Singapore to explore the question, "Does Singapore have a competitive advantage in smart-ness?"Prof Ang will share her thoughts on the types of "smart" she sees in America versus China, and raise these questions for discussion: In the face of two great nations, both brimming with smart people, innovation, and technology, in what way is Singapore uniquely "smart"? Join us for an engaging conversation with Prof Ang!6:30 - 7:00 high tea and networking reception7:00 - 8:30 fireside chat and Q&A ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr Yuen Yuen Ang is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan and a Faculty Associate at the Center for the Study of Complex Systems and the Center for Chinese Studies. Her research explains how non-linear, mutually adaptive sequences of development occur, and identifies the conditions for effective adaptation, particularly within governments. Prof Ang was awarded two Early Career Fellowships by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the Eldersveld Prize for outstanding research contributions by the University of Michigan, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation international essay prize on “The Future of Development Assistance.” She is a member of United Nations’ expert group on eradicating poverty, as well as the first South East Asian to be named a Public Intellectual Fellow by the National Committee of US-China Relations. She received her PhD from Stanford University and was previously a faculty member at Columbia University’s School of International & Public Affairs.Prof Ang is also the author of "How China Escaped the Poverty Trap", reviewed here by the Straits Times.
