(Please read the important notes below)*SCAPEmedia SPOTLIGHT and Singapore Film Society present Singapore Chinese Film FestivalScreenwriting for Chinese Cinema独立电影编剧面面观主讲人Speakers: 黄进 Wong Chun, 陈楚珩 Florence Chan, 吕吉元 Ler Jiyuan, 李昌荣 Alvin Lee 主持人Moderator: 李富楠 David LeeUnlike the Hollywood studio system whereby a movie would have the luxury of hiring several writers to work on a screenplay, independent filmmakers are usually the screenwriters or co-writers themselves who started off honing their craft with short films. Golden Horse Best New Director Wong Chun first broke into the filmmaking scene when his short March 6th, which he co-wrote with his writing partner Florence Chan, won Best Screenplay at the 2011 Freshwave International Short Film Festival . It would be another five years before they progressed to writing and making their award winning debut feature film Mad World. Singaporean writer-director Ler Jiyuan has been writing and directing for television for many years before he went into short filmmaking in 2016 with The Drum which was selected in competition at the prestigious Clermont Ferrand Short Film Festival. Ler’s latest short film Paper House, which is making its world premiere at SCFF, is an adaptation from Dave Chua and Koh Hong Teng’s short comic “Paper City”.Alvin Lee is a young Singaporean filmmaker who is currently studying at the Beijing Film Academy. His latest short film Seed, based on his original screenplay, has won Best New Director at the 2016 China Short Film Golden Hummingbird Award. This panel session will focus on the young filmmakers’ varying approaches to the process and craft of screenwriting as well as their thoughts on the current state of screenwriting in Chinese Cinema today. Florence Chan graduated from the School of Creative Media at Hong Kong City University in 2011, majoring in Cinematic Arts, and got a Master’s degree from the University of Hong Kong studying Literary and Cultural Studies.
