Art Deco apartments pre-date the current government. Owners of mom and pop shops still take time to make small talk and give freebies. The vibe is laid back, much like a kampong or village. Yet, it can’t be denied that Tiong Bahru is undergoing gentrification. Small businesses have closed, pressured by rising rent and competition from their newer, glossier counterparts.
