Previously, Lim taught at leading education institutions in Kuala Lumpur, including a private college and a center for children with learning difficulties. She was a founding leadership team member at Teach For Malaysia, a non-profit that aims to address national education inequity, and prior to that, a strategy consultant at an international professional services firm. She read economics at McGill University and holds a graduate degree in education from Harvard University, where she was a Maxis Scholar.
