Walking in Their Sandals
This area around Little India and Farrer Park is the ‘catchment area’ for South Asian workers. This is their home-away-from-home, where they can find familiar foods, toiletries, restaurants, roadside stalls, clinics, places of worship, and space to relax, socialise and swap news of home. Unfortunately this area has become less welcoming with the ban on public consumption of alcohol, closure of low-rent housing, and public perception that these workers are a potential danger to society and should be relegated to remote dormitories. These men came to work and make money to support their families, but those that have time off from work (many don’t-working 15 hours/day with no off days) make good use of this time and have created a special and vibrant area making full use of the non-commercial and open areas.
