Advice and evidence provided by economists, think tanks, NGOs and academics was brushed aside in favour of popular opinion based on emotions rather than facts.In a world where fake news, alternative facts, and social media echo chambers are becoming the new normal, has the public really had enough of experts? About the Panellists:Sir Richard Dearlove KCMG OBESir Richard Dearlove KCMG OBE became Chair of the Board of Trustees on 1 August 2014. Sir Richard, who has had a successful and distinguished career in government and education, joined MI6 in 1966 undertaking various overseas postings. He was appointed Director of Personnel and Administration in 1993, going on to become Director of Operations in 1994, before being promoted to Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service in 1999. He retired from the Service in 2004.Sir Richard was the Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge from 2004 – 2015 and also served as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge between 2005 and 2010.He is also Chairman of Ascot Underwriting at Lloyd’s of London and a Director of Kosmos Energy, a trustee of Kent School Connecticut and is a senior adviser to several international companies including AIG and an Honorary Fellow of Queens’ College Cambridge.Professor Bob O'KeefeBob is Professor of Information Management, Dean of the Faculty of Management, Economics and Law, and Vice Principal for External Engagement. He joined RHUL in January 2012.From 2002 through 2010 he was Head of School then Dean of the Faculty of Management & Law at the University of Surrey. He was previously Professor of Information Management at Brunel University, and an associate of Henley Management College. He has also held positions at the University of Kent, Virginia Tech, USA and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA, and a visiting position at the University of Sydney. Prior to all this he was the first graduate from Lancaster University in (what is now called) the B.Sc. in Computer Business Modelling and completed a PhD in Operational Research at the University of Southampton.Bob’s PhD was an early contribution to visual interactive simulation and interactive model building. His subsequent interests have been very diverse, but always at the intersection of modelling, decision support and the application of Information Technology. In the US, he worked on a NSF funded project on the process of modelling, and was part of a team that developed a method for assessing the operational quality of a SME. His present research and consulting interests are in the use of the Internet to support customer and consumer decision making. He is currently also revisiting previous research in behavioral OR, which has gained some recent attention.Dr. Mary Stiasny OBEDr Mary Stiasny PhD MA(Ed) BSc OBE Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) and Chief Executive of the University of London International ProgrammesThroughout her career, Dr Mary Stiasny has worked tirelessly to both deliver and promote quality accessible education across the world.Prior to becoming Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), Dr Stiasny provided strategic direction and leadership at the Institute of Education, in her capacity as Pro-Director with responsibility for Learning, Teaching and International.Working life for Dr Stiasny began as a secondary school teacher in West London. She then joined Goldsmiths College, where she was involved in initial teacher education, becoming Director of PGCE and Deputy Head of the Department of Educational Studies. This was followed by a move to Oxford Brookes University, where she was appointed Deputy Head of the School of Education. She then returned to London, to become Head of the School of Education and Training at the University of Greenwich. Following this, she spent four years at the British Council as Director of Education and Training before joining the Institute of Education.Dr Stiasny’s practical and strategic experience in education spans across a wide range of roles, including providing consultancy for a number of educational projects that have attracted external funding, and as an external examiner.Mr Emmanuel Daniel Emmanuel Daniel is the founder of The Asian Banker, the most respected financial services industry intelligence provider in the emerging markets. He is also the founder of The Banking Conversation, an online repository of interviews with a wide range of leaders and shapers of the global economy from a financial perspective. Established in September 1996, The Asian Banker has today become the most authoritative repository of benchmarking and evolving best practices in the financial services industry with a strong reputation worldwide. He is the principal author of several reports and surveys that are widely used by practitioners. He has served in various government advisory committees on the financial services industry. He was previously a member of Council on Corporate Disclosure and Governance in Singapore. He also served as the non-accountant in the Ethics Sub-committee of the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) of Singapore. As an entrepreneur, he has previously served as a committee member in the Entrepreneurs Organisation (EO), a prestigious grouping of young business owners worldwide and is an associate member of The Asia Society. Emmanuel was awarded the prestigious Citibank Excellence in Journalism Award for the Asian region in February 1999 for his work in determining the impact of the Internet on banking. He was trained as a lawyer, has degrees from the National University of Singapore and the University of London, and attended a course on economics at Columbia University in New York. Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1962, he currently divides his time between Singapore and Beijing.
