Research shows us that the direction of young children's play leads to unforeseen possibilities. This workshop will explore the meaning of play for young children and for the adults who care for them. What are the conditions necessary in order to respectfully facilitate young children's play? This question will be addressed through analysis, observation and dialogue. A child’s life consists in great part, of play; it is a fundamental need. Every child should be allowed to play, whenever not involved in a caregiving activity. And to this I add the concept of free play. Not directed or instructed play, but free play where a child can have the opportunity to discover and let his imagination wander.It may be at times difficult for adults to resist the temptation of telling the children ‘how’ to play. They may feel that they are not ‘doing’ anything by just being present in the play space among the children. However, one can experience joy when observing play, as it is a different level in the human condition: It is the ability to respect others’ needs and desires, and not to try to control them at all times.
