Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)Born in Hamburg, Germany, Brahms’ first musical training in piano, violin and cello was with his father, a well-regarded contrabass player who performed in the Hamburg Stadttheater and Philharmonic Society. The boy’s piano studies continued, but his teacher complained that Brahms “could be such a good player, but he will not stop his never-ending composing.” His later teacher was a pianist-composer who had been a personal acquaintance of Beethoven and Schubert, admired the work of Haydn and Mozart, and was a devotee of Bach, whose traditions became deeply grounded in Brahms’ own compositions.It was as virtuoso pianist however that young Brahms began his career, meeting the most influential musicians of Europe, notably including Robert Schumann and his wife, Clara.Tokyo Sinfonia & Robert Rÿker Lauded as “the most exciting orchestra in Japan,” the Tokyo Sinfonia embodies the warmth and immediacy of Robert Rÿker’s affectionate approach to music.
