L’arietta Productions, the local chamber opera company that brought Singapore OPERACALYPSE NOW!!, is proud to present the Southeast Asia premiere of The Four Note Opera by American composer Tom Johnson at Aliwal Arts Centre on March 31 – April 2 2017.Since its New York City premiere in 1972, what started out as a minimalist cult opera has gone on to international fame, being translated and performed all over the world. L’arietta Productions brings this hilarious one act opera for the first time to audiences in Southeast Asia.Utilising only four notes (A, B, D, E) and four singers, Johnson deconstructs conventional opera by retaining its form and the familiar tropes while showing the inner world of the singers singing in a production. Every possible permutation of time and space is explored within the confines of the four notes. The composer says,” My strongest feeling about the staging of The Four Note Opera is that every director should do it differently. Part absurdist, part minimalist”. Mary Ann Tear returns as director, this time with a troupe of non-singing physical theatre actors. The humour of the text will be highlighted in a very visual way and the intention throughout is to appeal to the audience’s aural, visual and kinaesthetic senses as they identify with the different characteristics of the various types of singers. The Four Note Opera will be performed by Singapore-based singers soprano Akiko Otao, mezzo soprano Angela Hodgins, tenor Leslie Tay, baritone Brent Allcock with Aloysius Foong as the music director/pianist, and Thomas Manhart makes a cameo appearance as the Bass. They are joined by exciting local physical theatre actors Gabriele Goh, Deborah Hoon, Haky Darsuki and Melissa Gan. Up and coming Singaporean visual artist Lee Wan Xiang joins the team for a true multi-disciplinary experience. The Four Note opera will open on 31 March 2017, 8pm at Aliwal Arts Centre. Regular free seating tickets are priced at $35, or for a more intimate experience, a limited number of VIP tables with a bottle of wine is available at $200. Meaning “a little song” in Italian, the name grew from its belief that while small and intimate, chamber operas retain the power of expression that rivals its grander, more well-known cousins. Founded in 2015 by soprano Akiko Otao and tenor Reuben Lai to encourage collaborations between the various arts, L’arietta is registered as a company limited by guarantee in Singapore, with the aim to be an enabling platform for musicians, artists, and theatre professionals in Asia.
