We believe in the power of collaboration between social entrepreneurs and global citizens from diverse fields to make this world a better place. At our 6th commemoration event, we will be welcoming a social entrepreneur from Fukushima, Japan, who launched his social venture with the vision to create a sustainable economy and society, through promoting the long-standing tradition of Urushi, beautiful Japanese lacquerware, on a global scale after the earthquake. We will also introduce WIT's cross-border activities to instigate social innovations and develop global citizens. After graduating from a university in Tokyo, he moved to Aizuwakamatsu. The turning point came in his life when he was 24, through life-changing visits to urushiware and ceramics workshops. The disaster on March 11, 2011, forced Wataru to realize the fragility of our convenient lives. He started to dream of how we could coexist with nature. As a powerful communicator who connects people to urushi, Wataru gives lectures and hosts events all over Japan to convey how Urushiware enriches our lives. Currently, he has offices in both Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima and Sumida, Tokyo.Mio YamamotoExecutive Director and Co-Founder , WITMio has more than ten years of experience in providing high-impact social entrepreneurs with capacity building and funding support. Mio co-founded WIT in the wake of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake in 2011 to scale and sustain the impact of promising social entrepreneurs in the disaster-hit area. Prior to starting WIT, Mio was a Partner of Social Venture Partners, a venture philanthropy organization. She also worked for McKinsey & Co. and Sumitomo Chemical.
