Based on several decades of experience, Mr James Cheng and Prof Gunter Dufey will share their unique perspectives on active versus passive management, alternative investments for middle class savers, building a global portfolio, currency issues in portfolio construction, and other insights to successful investing. Speaker bios: James Cheng is currently Adjunct Associate Professor at National University of Singapore Business School. James has nearly 30 years of investment experience in Asia. James was formerly Senior Advisor at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. James was CEO/Lead Portfolio Manager, Asian Equity, Morgan Stanley Investment Management until his retirement in 2012. At its peak in 2007/2008, James managed close to US$30bn of Asian/Emerging Markets dedicated money for institutional clients. From 2004-2006, James was CIO for Asia Pacific for Invesco Asia. James also co-founded Asia Strategic Investment Management in HK in 1996 (sold to Bank of East Asia in 2004). James started his career with Morgan Stanley Asset Management in 1988 and was a colleague of Dinh Nguyen. James is currently a member of the Investment Advisory Council of the Endowment Fund of the University of Michigan (one of the top 10 University endowment funds in the US) and also a member of the CAMRI Advisory Council (Centre for Asset Management Research and Investment of the National University of Singapore). James has an MBA from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Hong Kong. Gunter Dufey or "GD" as he is known among friends and colleagues, is Professor Emeritus of The University of Michigan Ross School of Business and Consultant on the faculty of Banking and Finance, Nanyang Business School. Parts of his academic career were spent at Stanford (USA), University of Texas, Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (Austria), St. Gallen (Switzerland) and Universität des Saarlandes (Germany) where he was appointed Honorary Professor. His research interests focus on risk management, international financial markets and corporate governance. He has published widely. Parallel to his academic career, GD worked for extended periods with a number of multinational companies and government agencies. He continues to serve on the Boards of Guinness/Atkinson, USA and until recently on several subsidiaries of Ally Financial (GMAC), Detroit and Toronto. He participates in managing the portfolios of several foundations. From 09/2001 to 02/2003 he was employed with McKinsey and Co. in Singapore, supporting the firm’s Corporate Governance practice in Asia. Currently he also serves part-time as Executive Director of EDUCATION EXCHANGE LTD, Singapore.
