Pedagogical Practice Sharing: Introducing an Applied Method to Teach Theory

Many aspiring musicians start their musical experience with an instrument from an early age. This soon becomes their main channel of creating and communicating their ideas, expression and emotions. All these becomes quite possible even before musicians understand about theoretical and historical details behind the music. Therefore, two essential components of music theory and music performance do not proceed at a similar pace.

However, this becomes quite different at tertiary level studies, where students are required to acquire new methodologies and terminologies to explain different perspectives of music. This often becomes a challenge to their prior learning experiences.

This pedagogical sharing shows fresh ways to handle theoretical concepts in practical ways that involve listening, reacting and creating, from an experiential level. The sharing will focus on activities that use improvisation as a tool to represent individual expressions and musical response.

The session is facilitated by NAFA alumnus and best BMus graduate (Class of 2013), Jeremy Wong Wing Kwan. Jeremy is currently pursuing his Masters in music theory at the Sibelius Academy, Finland. He is studying with theory professors Lauri Surrpää and Olli Väisälä; piano class of Jarmo Erikäinen; and composition with Finnish composer Tapio Tuomela. Since 2014, he has been the visiting accompanist for Swedish missions choir, Furahakören, and the resident pianist of the Swedish speaking church, Andreaskyrkan. Recently, Jeremy became part of the faculty of International School of Music (ISM) as a part-time music teacher.
