emergence of wearable and tangible computing, embedded electronics and the
Internet of Things has contributed in the efforts to bridge the gap between the physical
and digital world. The latter is no longer seen as something separate from the physical world,
but something that is embodied and connected to our everyday physical selves.
People-centred design is needed in all sectors – widespread adoption of IoT
technologies rely on increasing the acceptance and fit of these technologies into
people’s lives.
Decorative
patterns are an ever-present feature of our everyday world. Dr Marina Ng will draw on
recent experiences of making decorative patterns interactive so that all manner
of everyday things can be adorned with digital media and services. Pointing a
camera at a thing (or indeed pointing a thing at a camera) will enable people
to learn about its story - what it is, how it was made, how to use it, to
access personal memories, review their history of use, or trigger other
contextually relevant services. We will consider questions such as: How might
we interleave physical and digital interactions? How will designers benefit
from digital techniques that enable them to paint, glaze, emboss, embroider and
weave digital media onto physical things? Agenda:6.35-6.45pm - Introduction6.45-7.10pm - Re-imagining the Computer - A Design Thinking Exercise7.10-7.30pm - An Overview of Mixed Reality Lab Projects7.30-7.45pm - Break7.45-8.00pm - Demo8.00-8.30pm - Intro to Artcodes8.30-9.00pm - Designing Artcodes

to explore new ways of living, learning and playing. Her interactive work has
been featured in Science Museum London and Nottingham Castle Museum UK, among
other places. She has published in top Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
conferences and journals on mobile and tangible computing, Internet of Things
and user experience design (UX).
She is a past
recipient of the prestigious British Chevening Scholarship. She graduated with
a PhD in Computer Science from University of Nottingham, UK. She leads the
Children’s Library Puchong Playgroup volunteer team and is the founder of a new
maker education initiative – the ArtScience Play to foster creative thinking
and innovation in kids.
