But this is not the case for all Singaporeans. How come some people are so poor, they cannot even afford to buy their own meals or take the bus to school?NCA has invited three Singaporean experts on the topic to give you answers to the questions you may have about poverty in Singapore:Mustafa Izzuddin currently works for ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute and his research interests include the international politics of Southeast Asia with specific reference to ASEAN, and Islam and the Middle East. He received his PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science where his doctoral thesis studied the evolution of Malaysia-China relations from 1974 to 2009 through the lens of neoclassical realism.Richard Lim – Honorary Secretary of the Breadline Group, one of the charities NCA supports. The Breadline Group is a community service group comprised of volunteers, who have adopted more than 200 families. These people are elderly and physically handicapped and often have dependents to support. Every month volunteers visit each “adopted” family and provide food provisions and/or cash to supplement any public assistance they may be receiving.Dr. Brenda S.A. Yeoh read geography at Cambridge and completed her doctorate at Oxford University. She leads the research cluster on Asian Migration at the Asia Research Institute, NUS. Her research interests include the politics of space in colonial and postcolonial cities, as well as migration research in Asia, including key themes such as cosmopolitanism and highly skilled talent migration; gender, social reproduction and care migration; migration, national identity and citizenship issues; and cultural politics, family dynamics and international marriage migrants.
