Cyanotype: Self-representationCyanotype is a ‘camera-less’ photography process in which objects come into contact with light sensitive paper or another material coated in light a sensitive chemical to expose the outline of the shape of the object leaving a trace or an outline. The medium is a fun, hands-on and experimental technique. Many visitors to AAF are familiar with digital cameras, but this unique medium will allow them to look at photography in a new light, tracing the history of image-making back from the current technology-fuelled age, which is particularly educational for the young ones. We have also introduced in our Thailand programme, led by American artist-photographer Patricia Lois Nuss. The workshop will focus on self representation, with participants asked to look for objects or gestures that describe who they are and how they feel. Participants will be able to walk away with their own creations.2. Mini photo exhibition/educational outreachLensational will also be showcasing a collection of images taken by women in marginalized communities across South-East Asia, including girls at risk of trafficking on the Thai border and domestic workers from the region working in Singapore and Hong Kong. Tapping on the participatory ‘Photovoice’ method, the images were made after programmes that introduced them to the expressive and therapeutic potentials of photography, re-ordering their perspectives of self within the structures of their own communities in the journey towards empowerment and selfhood. The series hopes to unveil the emotional intricacies associated with migration and boundary-crossing, and prompt audiences to think about Singapore’s intermediary role in the midst of larger regional and global trends and movements. The work by the female photographers also examine how the process of navigating through urban and rural spaces could be a distinctly gendered experience. ---The same weekend, we will also be involved in an exhibition with our Singapore partner Aidha.
