2016, the Director-General of WHO declared the cluster of microcephaly cases
and other neurological disorders associated with Zika a health emergency. In
response to the global Zika outbreak, WHO/PAHO and its other partners set up
the Zika Strategic Response Plan in July 2016 which aimed to support
governments and communities in the management of the Zika virus through
detection, prevention, provision of care and support, and research.
In this
mini-lecture, Professor Heymann will be sharing about WHO's response to the
global Zika outbreak, bringing his experience and key public health perspective

Professor David
L. Heymann was previously the World Health Organization's Assistant
Director-General for Health Security and Environment. He currently serves as
the Chairman of the board of Public Health England, and is the Head and Senior
Fellow of the Centre on Global Health Security at Chatham House, London. In
2010, he joined the faculty at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicine as Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology.
