Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)Born in Rohrau, Austria, Haydn’s natural gifts soon prompted his parents to send him off to a relative to be apprenticed as a musician. He soon caught the attention of the Kapellmeister of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, who came looking for new choirboys for Vienna. Haydn served as a chorister until his voice broke at age 16. Unceremoniously dismissed and sent into the streets, he worked variously as a street serenader, music teacher, valet-accompanist, chapel organist, opera composer, and extra at imperial balls. In time he obtained aristocratic patronage: Countess Thun, Baron Fürnberg, and Count Morzin.
