On the eve of
the US's most controversial Presidential election, the Singapore Alumni Chapter
of the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) invites you
to an evening of food, drink and a challenging ‘War gaming’ exercise in
reaction to possible future events. Our esteemed moderator for this interactive
session will be Karl Friedhoff from the Chicago Council on Global
Affairs, who will be coming from the US for this event. He will provide our group with a conceptual
framework to better understand the future or the unknown, often in dynamic and
adversarial settings.
The popular
rise of social media has grossly altered the way we think, the way we express
ourselves and the way we no longer "agree to disagree" in our
discussions. Provocative statements, lies and bullying have become the norm to
alter public opinion. Double standards are more clear today than ever before.
Strong Female
leadership, often immediately interchanged with tough female leadership, is
frequently viewed negatively; whereas "Bullying" by male leadership
is often observed as a positive force of a successful way to lead. Leaders who
have resorted to a tone that results in divisive public opinions, undermine
harmony in society. The issue of race, religion, color of the skin and gender
drives us more apart than together.
Whether through
future scenario planning or move-countermove activities, this session will
offer a unique opportunity to test theories and hypotheses about what the
future might look like and what could be done, as well as give us an
opportunity to reflect how the world has changed in just the past few years.
Participants will have to let go of their normal thought processes and solve an
international crisis the way we think these US leaders will manage the world.
Provocative thinking and expression is encouraged.
