Nilushika, an Aidha student from Sri Lanka, has been working in Singapore for over 19 years as a domestic worker. She went through a lot of hardship growing up. Her mother died when she was 14 and when she was 16- both her father and brother died. Being the eldest in her family, she had to work for three years in a garment factory to support her siblings. She managed to finish her O levels and wanted to pursue further studies, but no one could provide financial support for four orphaned children. She came to Singapore in 2001 as a domestic worker because that was the only option she had. When she first started at Aidha in 2011, she had no savings. Nilushika graduated from Aidha’s courses in 2012 and she has now started an online business selling Samahan tea and other natural remedies unique to her home country. She recently returned to live in Sri Lanka but, thanks to Mastercard and Aidha supporters, returns to Singapore to share her inspiring story with Singapore Committee for UN Women and others.
On 25th October, join us at our office to hear how Nilushika overcame hurdles and persevered through difficult circumstances to emerge stronger than ever.
