A Tale of Two Towns: Of Government, Banks and Communities

Merchants and museums, economy and entertainment, finance and fine arts…

Separated only by the Singapore River, today’s Central Business District and Civic District find their origins in the 1822 Raffles Town Plan.

Discover the contrasting lives and activities on each side of the river: visit one of the oldest government buildings on the island, two sites that celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of our pioneers, and a historic temple which was also a community centre for the Teochews in Singapore.

Monuments covered: Former Empress Place Building (now Asian Civilisations Museum), Yueh Hai Ching Temple

Starting point: Entrance of Asian Civilisations Museum (1 Empress Place, Singapore 179555)
