Join our trial class on Friday July 23, 2021. Recommended for ages 6 - 10.Our creative contemporary dance class is for boys and girls, in an environment for young people who have shown an interest in dance, movement or acrobatics. They will experience the endless possibilities of contemporary dance -- floor work, balances, improvising, leaps and turns, gestures, going upside down... they will get to enjoy moving with a wide range of music, moods, and dynamics.We advocate for dancing to develop the mind-body connection, practise energy efficiency, and to cultivate body autonomy.After this trial class, the young dancers can decide whether to sign on for the full term. During the term, besides learning dance techniques and phrases, dancers will be learning and making choreography (solo and together). They can decide whether they want to do a studio-based performance for their families at the end of the term. Our Junior Dance Company nurtures young people into contemporary dance, encouraging all to make their own dances, push their own boundaries and imaginations, and collaborate creatively.Email bernice@derringdodance.com to enquire, and/or DM us at @rolypolyfamilysg :)About the teacher, Bernice Lee:Bernice Lee is the co-director of Derring-Do Dance/Rolypoly Family, with longtime collaborator Faye Lim. Bernice has danced for local companies Maya Dance Theatre (2014-2017) and Frontier Danceland (2012-2014). As part of Maya Dance Theatre’s main creative team, performed and collaborated in dance theatre works directed by Kavitha Krishnan and guests including Danang Pamungkas (Indonesia), Janis Brenner (USA), Olivier Tarpaga (Burkina Faso/USA), Rachel Ogle (Australia) and Rianto (Indonesia/Japan). With Maya, she traveled widely while training intensively in Bharathanatyam, Taichi, Indonesian and contemporary dance forms.Amongst other roles, she danced as Joan of Arc in PANCHA. At Frontier Danceland, she danced in repertoire by local and guest choreographers, including Matej Kejzar (Belgium/Slovenia), Noa Zuk (Israel), Ole Khamchanla (France/Laos), and Christina Chan (Singapore). A choreographer, an associate member at Dance Nucleus, and a lecturer at Lasalle College of the Arts and NAFA, she has worked as dramaturgy assistant for Shahar Binyamini in his creation for Frontier Danceland (PARADISO , 2018). Bernice has recently shown her work at M1 Contact Contemporary Dance Festival 2019 and The Esplanade’s Dans Festival 2020. Her work with theatre practitioner Chong Gua Khee, Tactility Studies: Hold to Reset, was part of Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) Festival House 2021.Bernice holds a B.F.A. from The Ohio State University (2010), during which she studied on exchange at the Laban Centre (UK). She was supported by National Arts Council and the International Buckeye Scholarship. She is currently an MA candidate in Fine Arts at Lasalle College of the Arts.
About Derring-Do Dance:Derring-Do Dance was founded upon the belief in contemporary dance as a radical way for every person to experience the creative, emotional and social capacities of their bodies. We are a company of dance artists, facilitators and instructors and are known for our work under Rolypoly Family and Body Smarts Through Movement Arts. Collectively, we have years of experience as dance performers and educators, specialising in movement improvisation, inter-disciplinary arts, and respectful facilitation, in Singapore and internationally.Our facilitators have taught at the Little Arts Academy, 10 Square (Youth Arts Academy), arts institutions such as Playeum, The Artground, LASALLE College of the Arts and SOTA, festivals like Got To Move Dance Festival, in dance mentoring programmes and various schools across Singapore, as well as at other dance festivals and camps regionally and internationally.The programmes we offer include: contemporary dance, movement improvisation, creative movement, dance partnering essentials, collaborative dance-making, family dance classes and workshops (Rolypoly Family), and Body Smarts Through Movement Arts. Our team is led by Faye Lim, BA in World Arts and Cultures (UCLA) and MFA in Dance (NYU Tisch School of the Arts) and Bernice Lee, BFA in Dance (The Ohio State University).
