Cecilia believes writing poetry can be for everyone, that everyone has a unique voice and poem inside of them. Writing poetry can be a process of wonder and experimentation. In this low-pressure and playful workshop, you will uncover exercises, techniques and prompts which will help you discover your poem. Workshop Outline:
Introduction to poetry led by Cecilia. Why do we write? Why is poetry so effective?
Warm ups: Stream-of-consciousness writing. What happens when we let go? Using a series of prompts to guide us to wherever we end up, with freedom and openness.
Step-by-step writing exercise. How might we build a poem in the way we would build a tower? Using a series of step by step prompts that build a poem.
Look at the work of a contemporary writer. How does this poem function? How does it make us feel? How might we use this poem as a template for our own?
Look at a poetic form and how it works. Try out your own Haikus and sonnets.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:(Credit: Hayley Madden for Spread the Word)Cecilia Knapp is a poet, playwright and novelist and the current Young People’s Laureate for London.Her poems have appeared in The White Review, Magma and Bath magazines. She has written work for the BBC, Guardian and Tate, and was shortlisted for the 2020 Out-Spoken prize for poetry. Cecilia’s debut novel is forthcoming with The Borough Press (Harper Collins) in 2021.Her plays Losing the Night and Finding Home look at growing up and dealing with loss, aiming to destigmatise the complicated conversations around mental health. Both opened to sell out London runs and toured nationally.Cecilia teaches poetry in various settings including as one of the lead tutors for the Roundhouse Poetry Collective.
