A workshop by Cheryl Tan.
Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan is
the author of the new novel "Sarong Party Girls" as well as the
critically acclaimed food memoir "A Tiger in the Kitchen," which New
York magazine named one of the "Top 25 Must-Read Food Memoirs of All
Time." "Tiger" tells the story of a year that she spent
traveling from the United States, her adopted country, to her native Singapore,
so she could reconnect with her family and learn about her family history and
cultural identity by learning how to cook in the kitchens of her grandmother
and aunties. This workshop will discuss food memoir as a construct, how to tell
powerful stories using the lens of food, and how to go about reporting and
creating this narrative. Please come with an idea of a food memoir you would
like to pursue and write -- perhaps with a little bit that you can read (just a
paragraph or a few) -- so we can discuss it.
