colourful the cities are. Certainly The Archifest Pavilion is a perfect
embodiment of this. But when we dismantle this temporary structure, will Grey
be back in business of being the most prominent shade? We invite you to explore the role of colours in designing
our surrounding environment and experiences. Are we afraid of applying colours
to public spaces? Can colour be beneficial to decode our social interactions?
What restorative properties does colour have for a city? How can colour be
integrated to complement minimalist forms? These are some of the questions
we'll explore at 'This Photogenic Artefact:
A colourful talk on designing our spatial experiences". Take a trip to the vibrant side of town and explore
the ideas from those who shape our environments in colour! SPEAKERSFrom left: Simon Berry, Mike Lim, Ang Guo Zi, Steven LouieSIMON BERRYPartner,

contrast to Simon's background in engineering, he believes that projects need
to move away from the engineering side of lighting and dwell more into the
heartfelt, soulful side of lighting. Based from Singapore, Simon and his team
have worked on a number of projects that champions lighting as a way to connect
beyond visual-aides. For
the Raffles Hotel in Istanbul, Simon and his team experimented with colour
temperature in lighting as ways to help hotel and restaurant guests to relax
and adjust their body clock with the local time. This is just one of the many
examples where lighting can step out beyond the visual sphere into the
experiential.Currently,
Illuminate is working on The Opus hotel by the late Dame Zaha Hadid, The
Crescent Development in Azerbaijan and a lighting masterplan for a resort
complex in Nha Trang, Vietnam. Simon started Illuminate in Singapore from a
small team that has grown into over 40 designers globally. MIKE LIMDirector, DP Design With experience ranging from event and exhibition design, business
administration to architecture, Mike Lim is now directing the concept design
and design development of DP Design’s wide range of projects including
commercial complexes, large condominiums, retail shops, restaurants and
offices. Mike believes that the commitment to perfection permeates every facet
of a designer’s life. Notably, he was the interior designer of The Dubai Mall,
the world’s largest shopping mall and prominent projects in Singapore such as
Resorts World Sentosa and Paragon Shopping Centre. Mike has also undertaken
numerous overseas projects and is currently working on Super Brand Mall
(Shanghai), Deli Medan Mall (Indonesia), The Ambani Mall (Mumbai), Respublika
Plaza Astana (Kazakhstan) and The Istanbul Mall (Turkey). As the director of DP Design, his primary responsibility is the design
and development of architectural interiors that tie in cohesively with the
architectural language of each project. At DP Design, interior architects
create environments that seamlessly integrate people, architecture, technology
and the ultimate purpose of the space. Its designers endeavour to preserve and
enhance the natural behaviour of a building, working with project-specific
materials, lighting conditions and planning techniques. The culture at DP
Design allows designers to work closely with the architects during building
conception, playing a critical role in helping to layout and plan the overall
building so as to express and achieve specific internal conditions.
ANG GUO ZIAssociate
Director, DP Architects One
of the youngest Associate Directors in DPA, her projects include the redesign
of her alma mater Raffles Girls’ Secondary for its future relocation to
Braddell, the Royal Wharf apartment tower fronting the River Thames in east
London, UK, and the lead designer of the Archifest Pavilion design team. She
enjoys the fact that her job requires a healthy dose of daydreaming and of ‘reading’
places, cities, their aspirations. She believes that imagination is still one
of Man’s greatest tools and good architecture allows imagination to set its
roots in reality, in people. In
fact the Archifest pavilion seeks to create a colourful, temporary realm into
which one can wander to forget the urgency of city life, and for a moment - to
daydream. Despite the idea of the pavilion being ‘This Photogenic Artefact’ it was crafted in such a way that
exploring and experiencing the space in physical reality becomes important to
understanding it rather than only experiencing it vicariously through
photographs. MODERATOR: STEVEN LOUIESenior Lecturer, School of Design, Temasek
