To accompany and contextualise the short Cinema Reclaimed season of Singapore-made films that deal with the themes of medicine and modernity, researchers Toh Hun Ping (SG Film Hunter) and Ben Slater (author of Kinda Hot: The Making of Saint Jack in Singapore), will take you on an entertaining and informative clip-heavy tour of how Singapore-made films have addressed 'the medical', and in particular used hospitals as locations - a trend going as far back as the Malay studio era. These films which have tended to grapple with the opposing themes of rural-urban and science versus superstition, might have been filmed in hospital settings or simply exploited the melodramatic possibilities of sudden illness as a plot device.This programme is presented with assistance from the Asian Film Archive.For more enquiries, please email NHB_SHF@nhb.gov.sg.
